Neighbourhood Regeneration and Renewal

Where we live can greatly affect our opportunities in life. For those living in areas of need, quality of life can be severely limited by what has been called 'postcode poverty'.

Neighbourhood Regeneration and Renewal aims to improve the quality of life for those living in the most disadvantaged areas by tackling:

  • poor job prospects
  • high crime levels
  • educational under-achievement
  • poor health
  • problems with housing and their local environment

The Department for Communities and Local Government's harnesses the work of all Government Departments, local public services, the community and private and voluntary sectors to tackle deprivation and drive through improvements.

The Government Office for the South East delivers Government policy in the region and acts as a voice for the South East in central Government. We are responsible for:
Overseeing regeneration and renewal work around the region and feeding back to CLG on what is going on locally.

  • performance management of New Deal for Communities funds on behalf of CLG in Brighton and Southampton
  • promoting and supporting the development of Working Neighbourhoods Fund within the two South East WNF areas of Hastings and Thanet, encouraging councils and communities to develop more concentrated, concerted, community-led approaches to getting people in the most deprived areas of England back to work
  • working with colleagues in other GOSE Teams to tackle issues associated with deprivation, crime, health, low education achievements, unemployment and poor housing conditions
  • acting as liaison point for CLG and others involved with neighbourhood regeneration and renewal, ensuring that knowledge about what works is properly collected and applied
  • ensuring that regeneration and renewal are embedded in the LAA process within the South East region
