People and Sustainable Communities

The Government's Sustainable Communities Plan was launched in February 2003. It aims to increase people's quality of life, reduce poverty and provide more opportunities for everyone. The Government Office for the South East makes this plan work in the region by overseeing a wide range of Government initiatives locally.

Government Offices make a vital contribution to the Government’s commitment to thriving, vibrant, sustainable communities. Communities and Local Government's Sustainable Communities Plan will affect every region of England, providing homes for key workers, regenerating towns and cities and providing parks for families and children. Above all, the plan is about helping people to live where they want to and having pride in their community. More information on the national picture

Ours is a large, diverse region. The work we do to boost, develop and sustain our communities is detailed in this section and includes:

Raising awareness of and helping to prevent drug and alcohol abuse
In addition to this, we also work with local organisations to help those with problems receive treatment and support.

Creating sustainable communities
We do this in a number of ways, including working to improve living standards in deprived areas, providing affordable housing and developing better facilities for young people in parks and green spaces.

Encouraging social inclusion
Our work in this field tackles problems such as unemployment, poor skills, health inequalities, discrimination and crime.

Working with the voluntary and community sector
We support the diverse range of voluntary and community organsations in the region and promote local Compacts, which are agreements that help the public and voluntary sectors to work together effectively.

Improving housing
This is a big issue in the South East, the UK's most populated region. The Government's vision is that everyone should live in a decent home and we are working to make this happen.

Encouraging Neighbourhood Renewal
We support the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit in its work to improve people's quality of life in deprived areas.

Promoting Community Cohesion
We help various local organisations to create and strengthen cohesive communities in which there is a sense of belonging and involvement for everyone.

Further information about these areas of work can be found within this section of the website.
